Extending real-valued functions in βκ

An Open Coloring Axiom type principle is formulated for uncountable cardinals and is shown to be a consequence of the Proper Forcing Axiom. Several applications are found. We also study dense C∗-embedded subspaces of ω∗, showing that there can be such sets of cardinality c and that it is consistent that ω∗ \ {p} is C∗-embedded for some but not all p ∈ ω∗.

Gradient-based parameter optimization for systems containing discrete-valued functions

Gradient-based parameter optimization is commonly used for training neural networks and optimizing the performance of other complex systems that only contain continuously differentiable functions. However, there is a large class of important parameter optimization problems involving systems containing discretevalued functions that do not permit the direct use of gradient-based methods. Examples...

Probability Generating Functions for Discrete Real Valued Random Variables

The probability generating function is a powerful technique for studying the law of finite sums of independent discrete random variables taking integer positive values. For real valued discrete random variables, the well known elementary theory of Dirichlet series and the symbolic computation packages available nowadays, such as Mathematica 5 TM, allows us to extend to general discrete random v...

Discrete-valued ARMA processes

This paper presents a unified framework of stationary ARMA processes for discrete-valued time series based on Pegram’s [Pegram, G.G.S., 1980. An autoregressive model for multilag markov chains. J. Appl. Probab. 17, 350–362] mixing operator. Such a stochastic operator appears to be more flexible than the currently popular thinning operator to construct Box and Jenkins’ type stationary ARMAproces...

Optimal discrete-valued control computation

In this paper, we consider an optimal control problem in which the control takes values from a discrete set and the state and control are subject to continuous inequality constraints. By introducing auxiliary controls and applying a time-scaling transformation, we transform this optimal control problem into an equivalent problem subject to additional linear and quadratic constraints. The feasib...
